The use of WhatsApp voice calls has become prevalent in many parts of the world, often replacing traditional phone calls. Despite their popularity, these calls have remained largely unchanged since their introduction, mirroring regular phone calls with a call screen that provides typical options for call management. However, compared to chats, these calls can be more invasive and less flexible. With the recent introduction of Communities, WhatsApp appears to be planning a significant upgrade to its voice calling capabilities, particularly for groups. This may involve the addition of an "audio chat" option that resembles the voice chats available on Discord
.
According to WABetaInfo, which was able to activate a new interface for audio calls in WhatsApp beta version 2.23.7.12, the usual call button in the conversation's top app menu has been replaced by a waveform logo. Tapping it will bring up a menu that allows users to choose between "Open audio chat" and "Call group." Although the feature is not yet functional, WABetaInfo was able to initiate an incomplete UI linked to the new calling options. When in an audio chat, the top bar grows to accommodate a single "end call" button at the top. As WhatsApp continues to develop this feature, more options are expected to be added to this new space at the top of the screen.
Although WABetaInfo has no additional information about the feature, its current configuration leaves room for speculation. It's possible that the feature is intended as an unobtrusive way to participate in and exit conversations with friends and colleagues in group chats, much like Twitter Spaces, Slack Huddles, or Discord's voice chats. The chosen name for the feature strongly suggests that it will operate similarly to these existing options, particularly Discord. Additionally, the fact that the "Call group" option remains available suggests this as well. Audio chats would likely provide a different experience, as they would not constantly ring users' phones until they join, as is the case with voice and video calls.
Due to the preliminary state of audio chats, it may take WhatsApp a long time to finalize the feature for release. Furthermore, as with any feature that is under development, there is no guarantee that it will ever be officially announced or released.
